Henry was the grandfather of Monica Dickens who became an author like her great grandfather.  Among her works is One Pair of Hands. At age twenty-five, Charles moved to Chatham. When Charles was ten years old, his family moved to Camden, London. He worked in a blacking factory there while his father went to prison for debt. Dickens's hard times in this blackening factory served as the base of ideas for many of his novels. Many like Oliver Twist soon became famous. When his great-grandmother died and transmitted money, Charles' father paid off his debts and was released from prison. Charles did not like working and wished to stop working after his father was released. However, his mother said that the family needed the money so Charles was forced to continue working. Charles then finished his schooling, and got a job as an office boy for an attorney. After finding that job dull, he taught himself shorthand and became a journalist that reported on the government. Dickens was a Unitarian.[3]

"I had no advice, no counsel, no encouragement, no consolation, no assistance, no support, of any kind, from anyone, that I can call to mind,” he scoffed. Dickens liked to blow his own trumpet, referring to himself quite matter-of-factually as ‘The Sparkler of Albion’. (Gently mocking Shakespeare referring to himself as the “Bard of Avon” at the same time.) A pet kitten named Bob, who was known for his devotion to the writer, was also memorialised through taxidermy like the original Grip. When Bob died, Dickens made his paw into a letter opener. This is now on display in the New York Public Library.

Charles Dickens was born on February 7, 1812 in Portsmouth, England, but moved to the town of Chatham, England when he was very young. His family was wealthy sometimes, but his father was very bad at managing money so the family was often embarrassed or running out of money. In 1824, when Charles was 12 years old, his father went to prison for debt, or owing money. This forced Charles to take a job in a factory to help support the family. This was an awful time for Charles and his family, but it was really important to his career as an author because he often wrote about poor people and their situations, and being poor himself helped him understand what these people were experiencing.
